Glass

What is glass?
The word "glass" actually originates from the latin word "glacies" (which means "ice"). Glass is called differently depending on the language, such as German and Roman. Glass, to many is known as something that is clear, transparent and is something that breaks and shatters easily. Contrary to this popular belief, glass is actually relatively strong and hard-wearing, which means that it could last very long even without much proper care.
How is glass made?
Glass is formed when sillica from sand, together with several other substances are heated to very high and extreame temperatures above 1000 degrees celsius. Glass however can have some of its properties changed when added with certain substances, such as titanium, which can give glass a yellow colour.
The history of glass
Naturally forming glass, have been found and discovered to be used by people as far back as 4000 years ago, which was at that time considered valuable. Then later, about 2000 years ago, the glass blowing technique was invented, and centuries later, what became of glass has now then become an item of everyday life.
What is glass used for?
Glass is now found almost anywhere in the modern world ~ the windows, the automatic doors we see at any shopping centre, the showcase windows, some old spectacles, and even in some televisions. Glass is a substance that may be useful in decorating objects, such as a building. Glass is a beneficial substance, but to maybe some others, glass may be a hinderence.
